Lady Lyons’ Soccer Team loses heartbreaker in first game of District Tourney play to Trigg.

In the opening game of the girls’ soccer tournament held at Crittenden County on Oct. 13, although the Lady Lyons were pumped up and ready for play, the Trigg girls proved to be a little tougher on the field and the Lady Lyons were defeated 3-2 at the final whistle.
In the first half, Victoria Lee, Chelsea Brehm, Krista McGill, and Kathryn French led the defense for the Lyon County Lady Lyons by keeping the ball away from the Trigg County goal in early play. The Lady Lyons’ midfield players Sidney Greene, Autumn Herrington, and Tori Jenkins also were skillful at hustling the ball on the field for their team. Jenkins, Paige McKinney, and Kelsey Martin all had shots on the goal during this half while Brittany Doom, the Lady Lyons’ goalie, saved several shots in the first half including an awesome save with 10 minutes left to go in the half. In the final minutes of the first half, Trigg was able to push through the Lady Lyons’ defense for several shot attempts. Martin received a yellow card when the referees called her for pushing. Trigg scored their first goal with 4 minutes left to go in the first half, which ended with a score of 1-0, in Trigg’s favor, and was distinguished by excellent play by both teams.
The second half was as exciting as the first and was marked by superior offensive plays by both teams. McKinney of the Lady Lyons scored within the first minute of play, bringing the score to a tie at 1--1. At approximately 10 minutes into the second half, Trigg County scored another goal, making the score 2-1 favoring Trigg. In less than a minute, senior Shelby Snow scored for the Lady Lyons., bringing the score even again at 2-2. During the second half, there were several free kicks, with Autumn Herrington receiving one of them after being tripped. This led to a close shot by Herrington. The last half of the game was well played by the Lady Lyons at all positions - defense, midfield and at the net. Despite a couple more close shots by McKinney and Jenkins for the Lady Lyons, the final goal of the night came at 22:46 when Trigg scored again. The game ended with Trigg County 3-2 over the Lady Lyons.
The District Championship game was played on Thursday night Oct. 15 between Caldwell County and Trigg County.
