Lyon County Middle School girls’ basketball teams win against the Lady Rockets

Last week the Lyon County Middle School girls’ teams were on home ground when they played the Crittenden County Lady Rockets, and showed their strength by winning both the seventh grade and eighth grade contests.
The seventh grade girls got off to a good start by leading in the first quarter 11-4. In the second quarter they added to their lead by two points for a half time score of 17-8. The Lady Lyons seventh graders had it all their way in the third quarter when they outscored the Rockets 4-0 to end the third quarter with 21-8. The Crittenden County girls tried to turn things around in the final quarter, but ran out of steam after scoring six points to Lyon County’s two. The final score was 23-14 for the Lyon County win.
Crystal Kelley led the Lyon County team with eight points, Melanie P’Poole tossed in six points for the team, Barrett Blackburn added four points, Rachael Williams contributed three, and LaShea Hollowell added two.
The seventh grade Lady Lyons came through with 18 rebounds against the Rockets. Once again Kelley led the team with five rebounds. Williams claimed four, P’Poole and Carly Ann Spedding seized three each, Blackburn, Shelby Murphy, and Faith Stone each garnered one rebound apiece. Others who contributed to the game were Erica Gaither and Alllie Kirtley.
In the second game Tuesday night, the Lady Lyons eighth grade team also showed the Lady Rockets Middle School who was boss on the floor when they outscored the Crittenden County girls 9-3 in the first quarter. The Lady Lyons added to their lead by scoring seven more in the second quarter to put the half time score at 16-3. The eighth graders kept their momentum in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Rockets 8-5, to bring the score to 24-8. The Lady Lyons added 11 more points in the final quarter, compared to the Rockets five, bringing the final score to 35-13 for the Lyon win.
Natasha Trimm led the Lyon County scoring with 11 points, Jill P’Poole added nine, Kacie Freeman and Haley White each contributed six, while Courtney Day, Sarah Duff and Megan York rounded out the scoring with a point apiece. Trimm also had eight steals against the Crittenden County girls.
The eighth grade Lady Lyons were also strong on rebounds against Crittenden with a total of 25. White led the rebounding with seven, P’Poole and York each picked up six, Kaley Wadlington claimed four, and Courtney Day picked up one.
On Thursday night the Middle School Lyon Lady Lyons teams travelled to Princeton to split a pair of games, with the eighth grade girls winning their game, while the seventh grade suffered their only defeat of the season thus far.
The Lyon County seventh grade girls game was close during the first quarter, which ended at 6-4, in Lyon’s favor. During the second quarter, the Lyon girls came on strong to outscore the seventh grade Lady Tigers by four points bringing the half-time score to 14-8. In the third quarter things fell apart for Lyon County seventh graders, when several turnovers and poor rebounding led to the seventh grade Caldwell girls scoring 10 points, bringing the score to 18-14 in favor of Caldwell. In the final quarter of the game, Lyon was unable to close the gap, scoring only four points to Caldwell’s eight. The game ended with a score of Caldwell 26, Lyon County 18.
Barrett Blackburn led the team with six points, Crystal Kelley and Rachael Williams each added four, Erica Gaither and Melanie P’Poole had two apiece to round out the score for the Lady Lyons seventh graders. Melanie P’Poole also had a trio of assists in the game.
Kelley captured nine rebounds, Gaither and Williams each had four rebounds, while Blackburn, La Shea Hollowell, P’Poole, and Murphy picked up two apiece.
In the eighth grade contest, the Lady Lyons fared better as they sailed to an easy win over the Caldwell County Lady Tigers by a score of 27-19.
Lyon County took the first quarter with a score of 7-0, then added to their lead in the second half bringing the score to 16-4. The Caldwell girls tried to stage a come-back in the third quarter, but were only able to gain three points bringing the score to 21 -12. The game ended with a decisive win against Caldwell of 27-19.
Kacie Freeman led all scorers in the game with 13 points, followed by Natasha Trimm with five. Jill P’Poole added three, Tricia Green, Haley White and Megan York came through with two each P’Poole had three assists in the game; York had two.
The eighth grade Lady Lyons took 25 rebounds against Caldwell on Thursday niight. Freeman and York led the Lyons with seven rebounds apiece. White seized four, P’Poole and Trimm each captured three. Green took the final rebound.
