Middle School Boys action
The seventh grade boys basketball team continued to blaze a trail through the competition running away from Caldwell 54-23 last week in Princeton.
In the first quarter, Jericho Wilkerson scored nine points, Dallas Galusha added eight, and Jordon Gary tossed in seven to for a 24-6 lead. That would have been enough for the win, as the young Lyons smothering defense held Caldwell to only 23 points for the game.
The Lyons didn’t quit there, though, as Brandon White scored six of his seven points in the second half. When the buzzer sounded, eight Lyon players had scored led by Gray’s 15, followed by Wilkerson with 13, Galusha 10, White seven, Ben Rooyakkers three, and Chad Duncan, Zhenya Trimm, and Dalton Nelson with two each.
Even though Austin Rush buried a three pointer barely after the tipoff of the eighth grade game, the Lyons dug themselves a hole falling behind 18-9 at the end of the first quarter. Feeding off their full court pressure, Denim Eubanks scored six second quarter points and Brandon White added five to chip away at the lead and claw their way back to trail only 27-24 at the half.
Early in the second half, a Brandon White trey tied the score and a basket by Jerico Wikerson put the Lyons in the lead for the first time and it looked like the Lyons’ pressure was finally wearing on the Tigers.
However, that’s when the wheels fell off for the Lyons. A three pointer by the Tigers, a fifth foul being called on Eubanks and the effort the Lyons had put in regaining the lead took the steam out of the eighth graders. The Tigers went on to outscore the Lyons 27-3 to end the game with a 57-35 win.
Scoring for the game were White with 11, Wilkerson and Eubanks with six, Jordon Gary and Austin Rush with five, and Zach Polston with two.
Middle School Boys Continue Winning Ways
The seventh grade Lyons improved their record to 6-0 with a convincing 42-6 win over Dawson Springs last Friday.
Nine Lyons hit the scorebook with Chad Duncan and Zhenya Trimm leading all scorers with eight points each. Duncan and Trimm were followed by Brandon White and Dalton Nelson with six points apiece, Jordon Gary and Dallas Galusha with four, Ben Rooyakkers three, Jericho Wilkerson two, and Shawn Scott chipping in one point.
The eighth graders found themselves in a battle that was not decided until the games final seconds.
The Lyons lead after one quarter 8-7 behind Denium Eubanks five points. The second quarter proved to be all Dawson Springs as the home team scored 17 points. Again, Eubanks was the Lyons only answer as he scored all seven of the Lyons second quarter points to trail 23-15 at the half.
The Lyons came out in the second half in a full court press and capitalized on some Dawson turnovers. Jordon Gary lead the charge with seven points and Eubanks added six more to cut the Panther lead to two points, 32-34.
The fourth quarter proved to be a free throw contest and the young Lyons were up to the challenge. Brandon White hit nine out of 12 free tosses in the quarter. Two of the games biggest shots were taken by Jonah Melton. With the eighth graders holding onto a one point lead with under four seconds remaining, Melton stepped to the line and calmly sank two free throws to ice the game and the Lyons escaped with a 50-47 win. For the game the Lyons were 23-36 from the chartiy stripe.
Scoring for the eighth grade were Eubanks with 19, White ten, Jordon Gary nine, Jerico Wilkerson and Zach Polston with 4, and Trey Greene and Melton with two each. The eighth grade Lyons improve to 4-2 with the win.
Both teams will be in action Friday night when they take on the Webster County Middle School Trojans.
