Lyon County Middle School girls basketball

The Lyon County Middle School girls’ basketball teams played their last game until after the Thanksgiving Holiday on Nov. 23, at home. The seventh and eighth grade teams each defeated the Trigg County girls again, having defeated them at Cadiz earlier in the season. The Lady Lyons win-loss record for the season so far stands at 9 wins, 2 losses for each team.
In the opener the seventh grade Lyon County girls were evenly matched by the Trigg County team. The first quarter was low-scoring and the final at the buzzer showed the teams tied at 4-4.
In the second quarter the Lyons lost a couple of points when the Trigg team came ahead for a half-time score of 8-10, Trigg’s favor.
The Lyon girls came out strong in the third quarter to outscore the Trigg girls 8-4. The score at the end of three quarters of play stood at Lyons -16, Trigg-14.
In the final quarter the seventh grade Lady Lyons held their own with the Trigg County Midcats to pull out the win in a close and exciting game that ended with the score Lyons-20, Trigg-18.
Individuals scoring for the game were Shelby Murphy and Melanie P’Poole with 6 apiece to lead the scoring for the Lady Lyons. Barrett Blackburn, Erica Gaither, LaShea Hollowell and Rachael Williams each had 2. Trigg County’s No.14, Grubbs, put in 10 points for her team.
Lyon County captured 27 rebounds for the game: P’Poole-7, Blackburn-5, Gaither, Hollowell, Crystal Kelley, Murphy, and Williams each picked up 3.
In the second game of the night, in spite of playing without one of their starters, Megan York, who is unable to play because of an injury, the eighth grade girls took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Lyons scored 13 points in the first quarter to Trigg Midcats 3.
In the second quarter, the Midcats staged a comeback, of sorts, as they out-scored the Lyons 7-2 to bring the half time score to 15-10, Lyons favor.
In the third quarter, the Lady Lyons poured in the points and ended the quarter with with score-board showing 29-15.
In the final quarter, the Lyons showed their superiority once again as they outscored the Midcats 10-2, for a final at the buzzer of Lyon-39; Trigg-17.
The eighth grade Lady Lyons individual scoring: Jill P’Poole-18 for the game high, Kaley Wadlington-6, Kacie Freeman-5, Haley White-5, Trisha Green-4, Barrett Blackburn-1. Trigg’s No.2, Mayes, scored 7 points.
The Lyon County girls picked up 43 rebounds total for the game. Rebounding honors went to Wadlington for her season high with 12. Other individual rebounding: White-9, Green-8, Freeman-7, Blackburn-3, P’Poole-2, Courtney Day and Rachael Williams -1 each.
There were 5 assists in the game with each of 5 players having one each: Freeman, Green, P’Poole, Wadlington, and White.
There were also 8 steals in the game: P’Poole-3, Freeman, Green, Natasha Trimm, Wadlington, and Williams, 1 each. Also contributing to the game were Courtney Day and LaShea Hollowell.
