Two days after upsetting tournament hosts and favorite University Heights Academy, Lyon County fell 42-37 to Crittenden County in the Class A Second Region tournament.
Lyon County struggled with fouls and shooting in the final game of the tournament. The Lady Lyons outshot the Lady Rockets 14-12 in field goals, but gave up 17 points off 23 attempts from the line.
Madison Champion and Cassidy Moss got the Rockets out early with buckets through the first two minutes to take a 4-0 lead. The two would be a bane for the Lady Lyons all night, combining for 12 points on 15 trips to the charity stripe. Moss pulled down 11 rebounds on the night, the only player on either team in double digits.
Terrianna Johnson put Lyon on the board midway through the quarter after a pass outside to Hannah Holloman came back to the senior. Allison Murphy scored with 2:52 minutes remaining, but Lyon County trailed 8-4 after the first quarter.
Lyon opened the second quarter strong, taking the lead 9-8 two minutes in after a bucket by Johnson and a 3-pointer by Holloman. Mauri Collins scored one of her two baskets to split Lyon County's run, as Murphy hit a 2-point basket with 5:09 remaining to give Lyon the 11-10 lead.
Crittenden responded with a basket by Champion and two from Kianna Nesbitt, taking the 16-11 lead into halftime.
The Lady Rockets stayed ahead 10-8 through the third quarter, and opened the final eight minutes with a bucket by Champion to go up 28-19. She duelled with a hot handed Holloman through the first five minutes of the fourth, sinking three baskets while Holloman drained a 3-pointer and added two from the free throw line as Lyon trailed 32-24.
Crittenden kept the lead 37-30 off trips to the line, offsetting 2-point and 3-point baskets by Murphy over the next two minutes.
With 1:19 remaining, Johnson stole the ball, put in a layup and hit one from the line to keep Lyon alive 37-33. Johnson and Allison Ellis would score a basket each through the final minute, but the Lady Rockets hit 4-of-6 from the line to maintain the lead 42-37.
With the win, Crittenden advances to the All A State tournament in Frankfort.
The Lady Lyons had a better game on both sides of the ball earlier in the tournament against the Lady Blazers. In that game, Murphy (14), Ellis (12) and Johnson (10) led Lyon County's scoring, joined by Ashlyn Doom (2), Holloman (6) and Jenna White (7).
Murphy and Holloman had eight rebounds each against UHA, while Johnson and Ellis had five each and White and Doom added three each.
