A two-run homer in the seventh inning Thursday by Jack Walker helped polish off Hopkins County Central during Lyon County's season opener.
Walker went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Lyon County. Cole Cannon also drove in a pair of runs, going 2-for-3. Brody Bridges had two hits on four bats, driving in an RBI.
Lyon County's bats were consistent throughout the afternoon, and so was the pitching. Bryar Riley earned the win on the mound as the Lyons gave up three runs on four hits.
The Storm took the advantage in the first inning with freshman Dalton Shadrick earning a single and scoring off a hit by Austin James. Lyon answered back in the second inning with an unearned run, then took the lead off a hit by Bridges in the third.
The Lyons would continue to extend their lead through fifth 5-1.
The Storm got back on the board with a two-run sixth, but Walker's bat would help keep the lead out of reach in the seventh.
The win puts Lyon at 1-0 during the opening week, but inclement weather has forced several games to be rescheduled. As of press time, Lyon will make up the March 11 game against Murray this Thursday on the road, and will play Ohio County on May 1. Green the Grandstands night was originally planned for March 14, but will be moved to sometime next week.
