Lyon County didn’t go longer than 2:18 without a score Friday as the Lyons steamrolled visiting Livingston Central 71-48.
Gabe Board opened the scoring 45 seconds into the contest with a 3-pointer. As Lyon County pulled ahead with another 3-pointer by Jack Rooyakkers, Livingston missed five field goal attempts over the first 3 minutes until finally getting on the board with a 2-point basket by Seth Hosick. Cardinal Dylan Sherer would get Lvingston within two points midway through the quarter, but Livingston would get no closer.
Hayden Murphy scored on an offensive rebound with 2:31 remaining, followed by a Peyton Martin trey. Murphy added another two points with 1:30 remaining as Lyon County took a 13-4 lead. Cameron Dean hit a 3-pointer for Livingston, but Martin answered with one of his own after Rooyakkers recovered a bobbled ball.
Lyon ended the first quarter up 16-8.
Strong defensive play early in the second by Max Wadlington and later by Rooyakkers kept Livingston from gaining any traction through the second stanza. Livingston drew its eighth foul through the first minutes of play, resulting in a change of possession and score by Nick Gilbert 2:20 into the quarter, and Rooyakkers hitting 1-of-2 from the stripe 1:04 later. A minute after a Josh Mincey score, Rooyakkers stole and got a layup to put Lyon ahead 25-13. The senior guard was fouled on the play, but missed the bonus.
Dylan Sherer hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining in the first half and recovered possession inside the final minute. Rooyakkers kept the visitors from gaining any momentum with 33 seconds remaining, dislodging possession at the edge of the court, leaping forward to bat the ball back to Lyon County’s control. Gabe Board drained 29 seconds off the clock. Lyon County went into the break up 25-16.
Starting the third quarter, Mincey added five points for Lyon County while Martin added another trey as the Lyons pulled ahead 33-23 with 5 minutes remaining. Lyon would go on to outscore the visitors 27-18 in the third quarter.
Wadlington drew a foul in the final 47 seconds, hitting 2-of-2 from the stripe, putting Lyon up 47-32. Wadlington forced a turnover 20 seconds later, setting up a layup by Rooyakkers, who was fouled on the play. Rooyakkers hit the bonus, putting Lyon up 50-32.
Gilbert hit two from the stripe in the final 12 seconds to send Lyon into the final frame 52-34. The Cardinals were unable to overcome shooting woes in the final frame, falling 71-48.
