The Big Green Egg demonstration at Akridge’s Farm Supply/Ace Hardware in Eddyville proved to be a popular meeting place about noon Friday as passersby stopped to see what chef Rodger Lutz was cooking for lunch.

At some point, there was pork tenderloin, but that disappeared rapidly, and then there was a choice of chicken legs or thighs — with or without sauce. While the meat was on the regular Holland grill, inside the Big Green Egg was pizza that was gently baking on the plate setter.

The Big Green Egg comes equipped with an easily readable temperature gauge on the outside, so that the grill master can determine when the meat has reached the appropriate temperature. According the manufacturer, the device is safer to use because of its ceramic surface which does not get as hot as a metal grill, and the fire is enclosed in a small area. It can be used to grill steak or cook a brisket, bake a loaf of bread, or grill vegetables.

Based upon its popularity, most passersby were quite willing to participate in any tasting experience that Lutz wanted to design.
