The School Board approved its working budget at its regular meeting Monday night. Superintendent Quin Sutton reported that the Kentucky Center for School Safety would audit the schools safety practices Tuesday. The audit was requested by the board. Architect Paul King updated the board on facility renovations that are nearing completion.
The roofs on the elementary school, cafeteria and bus garage are nearly complete, Sutton said by phone Tuesday. All the outside doors at the high school, and all the front doors at the elementary school have been replaced and a camera security system has been installed. Also the bus lift at the garage has been installed; old bleachers at the elementary gym will be removed Friday and new bleachers will be installed Monday.
Sutton also reported that Ashley Davis has been hired as a half-time special education teacher, and Bill Thorpe, elementary principal, has added high school softball coach to his responsibilities.
Middle School Principal Rob Richey reported he has seen student test scores that will be released Friday, and teachers are already taking needed action with individual students. In other business the board:
n Discussed in open session Sutton’s evaluation, the results of which were reported last month.
n Approved a report on a survey of certified personnel regarding their classroom facilities. The program is called Kentucky Teaching Empowering Leading and Learning Survey, which asked eight questions about the physical environment of teachers’ classrooms and whether they were sufficient.
Sutton said the survey showed classrooms were 85 percent to 90 percent sufficient and had improved from last year in seven of the eight categories.
n Approved a construction change order that, by using some of the existing door frames where doors were replaced, saved the board $6,000. And that $6,000 was applied to the $7,489 cost of changing the locks in the office and lobby at the high and elementary schools to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
n Approved an expansion joint change order for the roof at the elementary school at an added cost of $667.
n Approved the sale of a surplus John Deere tractor.
n Approved $27,565 in general fund moneys for repairs at the bus garage during the summer.
n Authorized Sutton to fill a part-time technology position.
n Took no action following an executive session to discuss litigation and a personnel issue.
