Lyon County's 10th anniversary

scheduled for June 12-13

Lyon County’s Relay for Life Committee is already hard at work planning its 10th annual fundraising event. This year’s Relay will be June 12 and 13 in Eddyville’s city park.
Anne Webber and Gerald Board are cochairs for the 2009 Relay, and both are already raising funds.
Board also functions as Lyon County’s online chairperson, and he announced a “Wii have team spirit” online challenge at last week’s meeting.

The contest was created to increase online team registration through the Relay website, and it ends February 1. In order to be eilgible to win a Wii Video Game Console, team captains and at least four team members must sign up online and raise a minimum of $100 online prior to Feb. 1. That money must be turned in to the finance chair in order to be counted – pledges are not eligible.

In other ACS/Relay News, team development co-chair Nancye Daniel said that she and Teresa Johnson are looking for new teams. Youth groups and church organizations are among those targeted for teams. Anyone interested in having a Relay team can contact Daniel or Johnson by phoning 388-9715 ext 411.

Any individual or company interested in sponsoring Relay should phone Lynn Aldridge at 388-9865.

Luminaria are on sale at The Herald Ledger office and select other locations around town. This year the memorials are $5 each until April 30, and $10 each May 1 and after. Luminaria Chair Judy Swinny, herself a cancer survivor, is also selling Torches of Hope for a larger donation of $100. These may also be purchased at the Herald Ledger office.

American Cancer Society representatives and other interested parties will converge on Frankfort on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to lobby for a substantial increase in the tobacco excise tax. Kentucky has one of the lowest tax rates in the United States on tobacco products and the ACS is working to encourage lawmakers to increase the tax by 70 cents, with proceeds to be used for medical services.

WAVE-J radio in Princeton has joined Lyon County’s Relay as a media sponsor, so stay tuned for updates.
The next Relay meeting will be held at the Lyon County Public Library on Wednesday February 11. Team captains meet at noon and the committee meets at 1 p.m. All interested persons are urged to attend and help the American Cancer Society “Round up a Cure” for cancer.
