Mayor Nancy Slaton is urging the public to nominate outstanding volunteers for Citizen of the Year. The deadline is Aug. 2.

The person chosen for the Citizen award will ride in the 11 a.m. parade at the 51st Founder's Day on Aug. 24. Following the parade, he or she will be recognized in ceremonies in the city park.

Slaton needs the nominations by Aug. 2 to allow time to have the plaques made.

She has named Eddie Dycus as grand marshal. Dycus is one of three organizers of the first Founder's Day who is still living. The other two are Frances Baccus and Richard Whittington.

Slaton said the Citizen of the Year should be someone who has "gone beyond the call of duty during the last year."

In the past, many times that person has been someone who has, and continues to perform, outstanding community services from year-to-year, such as last year's Citizen, Julian Beatty.

"I have a committee who will go through the applications and choose the person," Slaton said. "It is Frances Baccus, Richard Whittington and Jim Howle. All have been Citizens of the Year themselves. I think that's a good diverse bunch of people to pick what we are looking for."

The mayor said she expects to receive several applications "because it is an honor" to be Citizen of the Year. It is the highest recognition the city of Eddyville awards.

To nominate someone Slaton asks the public to submit a letter to her at city hall stating why the person should be named Citizen of the Year, and the things the person has accomplished for the community.

"I will keep the nominations all together and get them to the committee," Slaton said.

To send a nomination by mail, address your letter to: Citizen of the Year, Eddyville City Hall, P.O. Box 744, Eddyville, KY 42038, Attention: Mayor Nancy Slaton.

Besides Citizen of the Year nominations, Slaton also encouraged young women to enter the Miss Founder's Day Pageant scheduled for Aug. 10 at the Lyon Convention Center in Lee S. Jones Park. There are six age categories: 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, and 15-20. Registration for ages birth to 8 is 10 a.m. with the pageant set for 11 a.m.

The entry fee is $25.

Applications are available at city hall or at the Lake Barkley Tourist Commission office in Kuttawa. Tourism Executive Director Beau Choate is in charge. For more information phone Choate at 388-5300.
