I decided to write a book giving the many Bible reasons that I should not attend church so I set out to do it. The result was a hard bound copy of 400 pages, all blank! I can understand one who is not a child of God purposely missing church, but it does seem strange that one who know Him not be interested in faithful attendance. As honesty would have it, he probably has one or two reasons. Either you are so sick that you are unable to attend, in quarantine that you shouldn’t come. Probably, the real reason is that your love for the Father has grown cold!
You see when an ember pops out of the fire, it is glowing red, but being by itself, it turns to gray when away from the source of heat. While there are no real reasons for the healthy child of God not to attend church, many church members are like faulty cars. They usually start missing before they quit. I do; however, have several Biblical reasons for you to make your presence known when the doors are opened. First and foremost, it is a command. Hebrews 10:25 reads, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,” as the manner of some is, but so much the more as we the day approaching.
If that alone were not enough, He shows us by example our need. Luke 4:10 says that is was His custom (habit) to attend church. It is enough that the servant be like his master — Matthew 10:25. The Apostle Paul also was a regular churchgoer (Acts 17:2). A deaf man once attended church regularly and when he was asked why, he said “to let the devil know whose side he was on.” Thirdly, it gives you a good reputation. Some of the best people I know are regular attendees.
The church has been designated as the avenue organized by Jesus to carry His message to the world. Are you doing or not doing by your attendance? (I Corinthians 12:28). In Ephesians 3:21, Paul writes that Jesus receives the glory when we attend worship services! How much do you love the Lord’s church? Scripture tells us that Jesus loved the church and gave Himself for it (Ephesians 5:25).
Over the decades I have pastored, I have heard every excuse in the book. They say, “All they want is your money.” Hear me, Buster Brown, it is not your money to begin with. Everything you have is from God’s mercy and blessing. Too many hypocrites say you? I don’t suppose you attend other functions or shop with them? Get real! Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap (Galatians 6:7). Here is the bottom line, Demas hath forsaken him, having loved this present world and is departed. Let’s get our priorities in order.
