The Lyon County Lyons experienced their first big loss of the season on the road Tuesday night, March 28 in Bardwell. The Carlisle County Comets delivered a 13-2 loss, scoring multiple runs in all innings but one.
Two walked batters, followed by three singles, gave Carlisle the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Lyon countered on a two-out rally with a run in the top of the third after Johnny Bingham and Eli Baker hit singles. Peyton Williams was robbed of a two-RBI double that would have tied the game up when his line drive to center was snagged by Brady Sasseen, ending the inning.
At the plate, Sasseen dealt the Lyons more damage with a two-run homer to make it 5-1. Bingham controlled the mound the rest of the inning, striking out the final batter Jarren Bruer to close the inning swiftly.
Brady Belt scored the Lyons’ final run of the game in the top of the fourth. After a walk and taking advantage of a fielding error followed by a passed ball, Belt was on third when Aiden Waters’ sacrifice to center field gave him an opportunity to sneak home and cut the gap 5-2.
The Comets added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth before the big six-run fifth inning finished the Lyons off for good. Sasseen converted a bases loaded situation into a grand slam for the final 13-2 score.
Caysen Mitchell was on the mound for Carlisle. He surrendered two runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five. Bingham was on the hill for the Lyons. The righty allowed six hits and seven runs, five of them earned, over 3.2 innings, striking out five.
Baker led the Lyons going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. The Comets offense was led by Sasseen who went 2-for-2 at the plate with two home runs, scoring six runs.
