Lyon County preschoolers got a chance to get up close and personal with members of local safety and law enforcement organizations on Monday, May 9. The students are studying about community helpers, and this day gave them the opportunity to familiarize themselves with who those people are in our community. Randy Wright, emergency manager for Lyon County, is pictured talking to students about the dive team in Lyon County. He showed them some of the gear that the divers use to stay safe, including a dry suit and breathing apparatus.

Assistant Fire Chief Tim Schenk (pictured), showed students the special camera that firefighters use to be able to see through smoke when trying to rescue people. The students were able to see how their friends glowed bright white through the camera. Schenk also showed students how he could operate the hose on the fire truck through a remote joystick, which means that fewer lives are at risk when fighting fires. The water hose was a student favorite all afternoon.

Students got the opportunity to explore a working ambulance thanks to EMS Director Michael Wiggins (pictured). Wiggins explained to the students that the ambulance was what came to help you when you were hurt, and they had the tools to help start to make you better on the way there. Some of the students had ridden in an ambulance before, but for many, this was their first time inside of one. The small bed inside was very popular with some of the students. The police department was also involved in the event about community helpers, as Eddyville Police Chief Coleman Dixon was present to explain what police officers do.
