Youth vaccinations have started for Pennyrile District Health Department communities.

On Oct. 29, the FDA authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use on children as young as 5.

Following the FDA approval, the PDHD started offering pediatric doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at each of its five clinics throughout the Pennyrile area.

Brittney Meredith-Miller took her son, Owen, and daughter, Fiona, to the Lyon County Health Department to get vaccinated. Both children are students at Lyon County Elementary School. The campus is adjacent to the health department in Eddyville.

Miller said taking advantage of the youth vaccinations at the health department was an obvious choice for her and her husband.

Owen and Fiona were glad to get their second pediatric dose of the vaccine. Fiona said she knows other students at her school who have been vaccinated.

Last week, PDHD reported more than 100 youth vaccinations have been administered in its five-county district.

Grace Donaldson, administrative specialist for PDHD, said low vaccination rates at some of the clinics may be caused by other providers offering the vaccine, such as hospitals.

She said on Thursday, Lyon County had the highest youth vaccination rate in the district, Trigg County was second.
