Both teams were strong on the mound last Thursday night, as both Lyon County pitcher Beau Wilson and Scott County’s Landon Whitson were able to keep the evening uneventful for the most part, but Scott finished with a 3-0 victory.
Wilson saw only six batters in the first two innings, striking out four and walking none. Whitson struggled the second inning, allowing the Lyons two runners after they were hit by a pitch, but didn’t allow any hits after.
Wilson’s first pitch of the third inning was a hard-hit ground ball by Sebastian Arden narrowly passing Eli Baker at third for a single. With two outs on the board, Shawn Rowe drove Arden home on a line drive to right field, scoring the Cardinals’ first and only run of the inning. Peyton Williams picked off Rowe attempting to steal third to end the inning before any more damage was done. The Cardinals led 1-0.
The Lyons had three more innings to break their slump but came up empty in the third and fourth innings. Braden Trice was walked in the fourth inning but was thrown out advancing to second on John Ryder Bingham’s fielder’s choice ball hit to shortstop. Bingham was left sitting on second, as Whitson threw his sixth strikeout of the night.
A walk and a hit by pitch rattled the Lyons in the top of the fourth and ultimately led to Lopez, who singled on a line drive to right field, stealing home. Catcher Peyton Williams did manage to pick off Connor Wilson at second for the second out followed by Wilson striking out Wilhite for the third and final out of the inning. The Cardinals added one more in the fifth, when Arden scored on a passed ball to end the game 3-0.
Wilson, who pitched all five innings for the Lyons, saw 18 batters, striking out eight, allowing four hits and three runs, walking two with two errors.
Whitson surrendered zero runs on zero hits over five innings, striking out six.
