The Lady Lyons picked a tough opponent to start the season: 2021 7th district champions Hopkins Central. A late fourth quarter 10- 26 run by the Lady Storm ultimately sealed the Lady Lyons fate, 72-40.

Just three minutes into the game, the Lady Lyons had the score tied up, 7-7, but a 12-point run by the Lady Storm finished the first quarter with the Lady Lyons down, 19-7.

Gracen Wynn put the first points on the board in the second quarter, trimming the lead back, 19-9. With less than a minute until half time and the Storm leading 36-18, Wynn nailed one from outside the arc, followed by a last-second bucket from Rose Smith, closing in on the 36-23 gap.

Calista Collins’ opening third quarter basket from the block paired with Wynn’s long jumper trimmed the Lady Storm lead back to single digits, 36-27. It didn’t last long before Hopkins Central put up 10 straight points prompting a Lyon timeout. The Lady Lyons offensive struggles mounted into a 56-32 shortfall by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. A third quarter 23-point lead along with a 17-8 run in the final stanza ended in a 72-40 win for Hopkins Central.

The Lady Lyons 26% total field goal average became apparent in the fourth quarter, with the Lady Lyons only 15-for-56 for the night, including 4-for-25 from the three-point line. At the free throw line, things weren’t much better with only 6 of 18 free throws adding up to an overall percentage of 33% for the night.

Wynn led the Lady Lyons with 15 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Ella DeFew and Collins, who each had 8. Collins also led the Lady Lyons in rebounds with 11. Hadlie Butler finished with 5 points while Lilly Perry and Rose Smith each tallied 2.
