The Mayfield Lady Cardinals put together a big fourth quarter to roll out to a 54-52 win over the Lyon County Lady Lyons on Saturday night, Feb. 11 at the Akridge Ace Jam.

A lay up from Lexi Holland gave the Lady Lyons a slim 10-9 lead going into the second quarter.

Piper Cotham and Lexie Feagin traded 3-pointers in the opening minute of the second frame to keep it close. Four straight from Trinity Taylor would give the Lady Lyons a five-point cushion. A made free throw gave the Lady Lyons their biggest lead of the game at 24-15, before a late run from the Lady Cardinals cut the lead back to five at 26-21.

The Lady Cardinals chipped away at the Lyons’ advantage to 35-31 heading into the final eight minutes. A three from Lay Mayes followed by a free throw from Addaley Smith tied the game at 35 with 6:54 left to play.

Lilly Perry and Taylor added two each to give Lyon room to breathe with 6:16 left on the clock. That lead was short lived though as Mayfield scored eight straight to take the lead at 43-39. The Lady Lyons had few opportunities to take the lead. Cotham’s three put the Lyons within two, and an and-1 from Taylor put the Lyons trailing at just 52-50.

Taylor hit a layup with about seven seconds on the clock, but a foul wasn’t called, leaving the Lyons down 53-52 and needing to foul to stop the clock. With just 2.1 seconds on the clock, Feagin hit 1-of-2 free throws for the final 54-52 margin with no time left for the Lyons to answer.

Taylor topped the score sheet for Lyon County with 18 points. Cotham finished with 12, including three made 3-pointers. Perry added nine, all in the second half.

Mayes was among four Mayfield players in double figures with 14, all in the second half. Smith, Feagin and Skylar Mandry all had 11 points.
