Lyon County freshman Bray Kirk goes up for a contested layup on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Lyons’ 91-63 win over Caldwell County.

Despite an early 11-2 lead from the Caldwell County Tigers, the Lyon County Lyons were able to turn things around and celebrate a 91-63 win on Saturday, Feb. 4 in honor of senior night.

The Lyons got into trouble early as full court defensive pressure didn’t seem to faze the Tigers. JayDarius Wilson added 14 first quarter points to aid the Tigers in the 11-2 lead, which grew to 19-7 after a made free throw on an and-1 from Wilson. Travis Perry countered with a three to get it back to single digits, but it was short lived as Demaurius Thompson hit from downtown to stretch the lead back to 12, 22-10. The Lyons put together a 14-3 run in the final two minutes of the opening quarter to trim the Tigers’ lead to 25-24.

After that, it was all Lyon County.

The Lyons held Caldwell County to just two baskets, one from Collin Whittington and Luke Parker each, while Carter Whittington added one of two free throws for just five points in the second quarter. Perry and Reddick combined for 17 points to extend the Lyons’ lead 45-30 going into halftime.

Wilson was back at it in the second half, hitting double digits for the Tigers. As the Lyons put pressure on Wilson, Thompson and the Whittington boys picked up the slack. Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 1:55 left in the third quarter to put the Tigers as close as 58-46, but that was as close as they would get as Reddick, Shoulders and Lukas Breedlove were able to extend the lead 64-50 going into the final frame.

Lyon County opened the final frame with a 9-0 run that put the Tigers away for good as Caldwell’s Carter Whittington made just 4-for-9 free throws, paired with just four baskets total from Collin Whittington and Jack Roach would conclude the Tigers’ scoring. Except for Perry, Lyon County struggled from the line as well, shooting just 10-for-19 from the line in the fourth quarter alone. Despite the trouble at the stripe, Lyon County was able to build a big enough lead through three quarters that it did not make a large impact on the outcome.

Perry led the Lyons with 37 points with Reddick chipping in 22 points. Wilson led Caldwell County with 24 points. Collin Whittington finished with 11, while Thompson added 10 and Carter Whittington had nine.
