The Lyons came out on top in a pitcher’s duel against Gallatin, Tennessee, in the final installment of the Donnie Everett Classic in Clarksville, Tennessee. A combination of Austin Spears and Brady Belt held Greenwave to just two hits to secure the 2-1 win on Saturday, April 8.
It was a blank board until the top of the fourth when a walk and a hit by pitch afforded Lyon an opportunity to get the offense going. Spears delivered a pop fly to right in the pocket plating Aiden Waters and Colton Prow to give Lyon the 2-0 lead. On the mound for Greenwave, Amarius Dunn forced a pop up to end the inning with Lyon in scoring position.
In a similar scenario as the fourth inning, Gallatin also capitalized on a pair of walks in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, and two on base, Max Kelley delivered a hard ground ball to left, plating Garett Bruce. Quick action on Peyton Carney’s part kept it down to a single run before Spears delivered the third strike to the plate.
Spears helped the Lyons hold on to the 2-1 lead through the final inning for the win.
Brady Belt pitched the first five innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, while striking out six. Spears closed out the final two innings, allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out two.
Spears was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored while Turner Hurst was 1-for-3 with a double.
